In these message boards military mothers consider themselves a part of the military and war effort and take on some of the rules meant for military personnel. Many message boards describe military directives as rules for participation and rules for mothers’ own conduct during wartime. As Renee, a moderator for Proud Army Moms, explained, military rules like DoD Directive 1344.10 apply to military mothers, and that means that political discussions should be kept to “close family and friends.”

We know the rules the military uses apply to us, no political involvement when in uniform or as a representative of the military, but OK as a private citizen. I try to follow that rule, no outright discussion with people I don’t know, but OK with close family and friends.
