Chapter Eleven

Matteo frowned. What’s that mad Rhattan witch done now?

She’d worked a healing spell that weakened her and left her vulnerable. ’Twasn’t the actions of a self-serving sorceress.

Awed people stooped to touch the renewed ground. His gaze dragged to where Valkyn sat under the tree. Mari’s head rested in the riever’s lap as the big blond man ran a hand through her long black hair. Valkyn’s frosty gaze clashed with his. ’Twas clear, possessive warning in the Isadorikjan warrior’s posture and eyes.

Matteo growled at the mingled scent of Valkyn and Mari. Traces of attraction and spent sex lingered in the air, an assault on his senses. Lust tightened his whole body. Mari had rejected him in favor of Valkyn. That rankled. He’d never known a woman able to shake off the allure. Even in her state of arousal and need, she resisted his allure and turned to Valkyn for comfort. A mere mortal, a berserker riever, scourge of the known world…

What is it with her? She turned Finora against me…yet she risked her life to free me.

“What she did, she did for love of Finora, not hatred of you.”

Matteo ground his teeth as he recalled Imani’s earlier admonition. Imani. There stood another puzzle.

What’s she want with me? They’d done what she wanted. She kept need under control. But was there more to it? Why does she keep after me, day after day? Push, question, challenge ’til my head hurts?

Awake. Asleep. Made no difference. Imani plagued his thoughts, roused his body. What had moved him to speak on her behalf to Emandu’s warriors?

A fortnight had passed. More than one Theressan woman cast inviting glances his way, but he felt unaffected. Even his call to Mari proved more challenge and manipulation than true interest. What would he have done had she responded?

Imani’s ruined me for mortal relations, and where does such leave me in the long run? When this was all over, where to go and what to do? What future had he here—or anywhere? What does Imani want of me?

Silence.

Leave it to her to remain silent now I’ve questions of my own. Next time she came to him, he wouldn’t get distracted. I’ll ask.

Tearing himself from those thoughts, Matteo sought out Kiwe and Baako. They sat with Sangor and Kotar on woven grass mats around a small campfire. The wee king caught his gaze and waved him over.

“We leave for Jengo’s village in the morn,” Kotar stated.

Baako tugged at an ear. “Should’ve left today. ’Tis unsafe to stay in one place for long.”

Kotar shook his head. “The Rhattan raisa needs to rest. Let our people reap the benefits of her healing spell a bit longer.”

“We march to war.” Kiwe’s copper eyes were solemn. “There’s no turning back now. Allow the women and children one last day of peace.”

“So what’s the plan?” War, the one thing to take his mind off his irrational ponderings. In a fight, there was no room for thought or doubt.

Grandmother brought over a gourd, and the men passed it about.
