CHAPTER 4

Rex growled in frustration as he listened to the Shifter Council member drone on and on about their continued relationship with the Wardens and what the future meant.

After greeting the host, he’d turned and introduced Rex to the Chair of Interspecies Cooperation and Rights Development. Rex fucking hated politics, but he knew this was why he was here. Still, he felt antsy about leaving his mate alone for so long.

Candra was probably bored as hell. She’d told him to call her Candy, but he couldn’t do that. Couldn’t call her Candy without images of eating her floating through his mind and that was not a good thing in this fucking costume.

He was going to kill Nathan. The receipt on the costume had a notation that the request for a change from Naval officer to this had been received and made. The prick did this to him on purpose.

Then again, because of the change, Rex got to see Candra in the flowing Roman noblewoman costume which was a damn sight better than a Navy officer’s rig. Maybe he should thank the arrogant SeaDragon instead? He’d think about it.

The male counterpart of the duo, aka his gladiator costume, was little more than a miniskirt for fuck’s sake. Yes, there was a hip length cloak to cover the rest of him and a pair of shackle bracelets, but seriously, there was simply not enough material to do the job right. Rex was a really big guy.

The fuck were you thinking Nathan? He growled in his head. He felt like a goddamned stripper.

Will this guy ever shut up? He could hardly follow what the Council Chair was saying with thoughts of Candra invading his mind. At any rate, picturing her sweet face and bell-like laughter was a damn good replacement for the dull whine of the Councilman.

Of course there was one big problem Rex had yet to address when it came to his future mate. He hadn’t explained anything to her about what he was and what she was.

As a Grizzly Bear Shifter and retainer of Taurus Rex Bastian had worked his way up in the secret organization of the Wardens of Terra to his position as Station Master in a remarkable short amount of time. He was dedicated and hardworking. And Rex had a great deal of responsibility thrust upon him at all times.

He could handle all that. No problem. But what was he going to do with a delicate normal mate who was too trusting with strangers? She’d practically jumped at the chance to go off alone with him in his car!

He was sued to being alone. Used to being hard and angry. It made him an excellent warrior. But would it make him a good mate? Candra deserved to have someone who would cherish and love her like the precious gem she was.

And she really was. He knew it instinctively. She was so full of bubbling warmth, honesty, and curiosity?

I will make her happy, his Bear insisted. But the real question was, would she even want him to try after she discovered what he was?

Fuck and damn.
