Eighteen

I kept my poise until we’d reached our living room, and even then I didn’t explode. Instead, I sat in a chair at the dining table and fumed.

Delta might play a small role in the day-to-day running of the pack, but a full-blown murder was a step up from checking property boundaries and investigating mismanaged funds.

Taking interviews, reading boring reports, sitting through endless stakeouts, consulting with experts—he had no idea of the hard work a major case involved.

Drake stalked awkwardly in circles like a hunter wading through marshy undergrowth.

“This sucks.” I spat out the words, feeling they deserved to be heard. “Having to watch Delta stumble his way through the investigation is bad enough, but his failure could ruin my future. How can I lead a pack when this suspicion hangs over me like a comic-strip rain cloud?”

“Delta has a job to do, so let him do it, and let him do it without looking over his shoulder. Christ, he hasn’t even started, and already you’re complaining about him.” Drake fell into his chair and instantly crossed his arms. “That’s all you do. I know you’ve been hurt, but negativity isn’t going to change anything.”

Negativity? What did he expect? My life had been good before I’d met him and his charmed small-town existence. I’d had a good job, a great new condo, and plenty of friends. Cue the Moon Promise. Its magic had offered love with one hand while stealing just about everything else with the other. Now even my crown was moving further out of reach.

“You don’t know anything.” My tone flattened. “I don’t want to doubt Delta. I don’t want to hate him or any of my pack members, and I’m so goddamn tired of feeling on edge when I’m near them.”

“Then give him a chance and stay out of it. You’re not kids anymore.” His eyes dipped into dark grays I hadn’t seen before.

“If I lose my throne—”

“For fuck’s sake. If this doesn’t work out, we’ll go back to Marlontown and still have a good life.”

His explosion sent my mind into a tailspin. My airways folded into loops and knots, creating a crushing pressure inside my chest.

Going back to Colorado sounded so easy, and for Drake, it would be. He’d comfortably slip back into his role as a protector, beloved by his pack. Me? I’d be his wife. Period. Ten years from now, I’d still be his wife. A small town had little use for a private eye.

I held on to the table with both hands. “Is that what you want? Go back?”

“Don’t put words into my mouth.” He did something screwy with his lips I couldn’t figure out, although his words made his frustration clear enough.

A woman dressed in a discreet black jacket and skirt arrived, pushing a cart with our evening coffee, cupcakes, and two cups into the living room. Her buttoned-up uniform and subdued demeanor epitomized the future waiting for me in Marlontown.

“Jeez.” I got up and put on my shoes, disgusted at throwing a pity party for myself.
