View of Montauban brickyard taken on 26 October 1915.

There were great numbers gave themselves up as prisoners, and they did it in anything but a manly way.….. Most of us out here have a great respect for their artillery, but so far a contempt for their infantry?33

The western end of Dublin Trench connected with Glatz Redoubt and as this, too, had fallen by the time the 20th men were beginning to consolidate their gain, it was possible to move along the trench and make contact with the 18/King’s and 19/Manchesters who were also consolidating their capture. One of the most important tasks was to dig a new trench forward of Dublin Trench, as the German gunners on the Guillemont Ridge knew the exact range of their former reserve lines. Lance Corporal Quinn described the situation:

When our line pushed on further, we found that the German fourth line was too congested so we had to dig ourselves in. The shelling was very bad just here, but not many of our fellow got hit. It was later on, when we were holding the trench we had dug, that we had a hot time, for the German artillery picked up the range very quickly, and were soon dropping shells right over the parapet?33
