Chapter 9

RORAN

The moment I step foot into my cave, I’m smacked in the face with a variety of strong yet delicious smells. I can’t quite place them, but there’s spice and some kind of nutty aroma attached to it, a combination I would’ve never thought to put together myself. Even so, my stomach rumbles, and I follow the enticing scents along with the sounds of fire crackling deep into the tunnel.

I find Bea awake, wearing Jagrid’s pelt still, and huddle over a low fire and a skillet. Inside, there are four large eggs sizzling and some glazed roasted nuts, and beside her on the log is a plate decorated with what looks like grass or leaves.

She’s made an entire meal… I think so anyway. My diet consists of meat, meat, and more meat, and this isn’t quite that.

Maybe this is another human custom I don’t understand?

Either way, when Bea’s head lifts and she sees me standing there, her lips quirk up in a smile. With her pink curls a mess and her eyes still heavy with sleep, my heart skips. She is beautiful. And having her with me, making food in my home, makes my insides twist with both excitement and confusion.

“Hey,” she says as she scoops the eggs and nuts onto the plate. “I made you breakfast. Or maybe it’s dinner? I’m not really sure what time it is here, but…I made you food.”

Wait, this is for me?

I’m so stunned that the only thing I can think to say is, “Why?” Which I regret the moment it comes out of my mouth.

“I don’t know. To be nice? For letting me sleep in your bed? For not killing me because I dragged you into this mess?”

My head tilts to the side, studying her.

How peculiar…

Standing, she pushes the plate into my hands and scowls. “Would you rather I say it’s a thank you for getting me off?”

I laugh–I can’t help it. My little witch is funny. And when she’s annoyed with me, like she is now with her hands on her hips, she’s even cuter somehow. It makes me want to pull her into my arms and crush my mouth against her pouting lips.

Instead, I glance down at the plate in my hands, at the food she’s made for me.

“Thank you,” I say. “You didn’t have to make me anything.”

Her smile returns, but it’s quick and playful. “That’s called a salad by the way. It’s good for you. At least, I hope that’s what it is. I’m not familiar with your vegetation here, but they looked innocent enough. Hopefully nothing on the plate is poisonous since I already ate mine.”

“I think you’ll be okay,” I chuckle. There may be a lack of meat here, but it does smell good. I might have to give it a try. Open up to new things and all that. Like Bea.

But that brings up another question. How did she even find the ingredients to make this meal? I certainly don’t keep salad stored away. My reserves are mostly dried and salted jerkies from the things I’ve caught during my hunts.
