TRINITY

I stumble back towards the house, Tarin’s touch still searing my skin and the truth pursuing me. I believed the monsters were hidden in my world but here, I’m part of theirs. Tarin didn’t confirm or deny, partly due to Caden’s reaction, but I’m no longer doubting everything I’ve seen and heard in the last week.

Why the fuck did they hide themselves from me? Or are they hiding from somebody else? I wanted them to come back to me for months and never knew how to find them, or if they existed. They exist. These monsters—or fae—disguised themselves as human guys to attract me when I want who they really are. I didn’t desire friendly and caring as they are now, but because they spoke to a wilder, darker side I’ve kept under control.

The three guys need to admit who they are, explain and then return to the twilight world we share.

Stella stands on the porch with a mug between her hands, surveying the grounds. I never see her dressed in anything different from her blue pants and tunic, nor do I ever see a single hair rebelling against the sleekness. I can’t figure out her age; she could be anywhere from mid-twenties onwards, but she acts like someone with more life experience.

I’m permitted to walk the estate as much as I like in the daytime, so why do I feel that she’s watching me with displeasure?

Does Stella know details about Dr. Radcliffe’s treatment or that monsters live at Briargrove? Stella called after Charlotte Sometimes, when she ran from the house that night, but did nothing to help, which I still find odd.

As I pad towards the house, she slowly moves down the steps, flicking her gaze over every inch of me before blocking my way. I breathe raggedly, face streaked with perspiration after my encounter with Tarin.

“Trinity. Dr. Radcliffe told me you had a breakthrough today. I’m concerned about the effect on you and it appears those concerns are correct.”

I brush at my mussed hair and hope there’s no bark attached to my T-shirt. “The memories were... unsettling.”

“Would you like some help with calming yourself? Your aura feels very uneasy and I sense something more.” She peers closer. “You’re flushed. Have you taken a run around the estate?”

“Yes. Exercise is great for calming the mind, isn’t it?”

Stella gives a tight smile. “I believe so, but I’m concerned. I often see guests struggle with what they learn about themselves. Come. I’ll find you something.”

“What type of something?” I ask suspiciously. “I don’t want to take any pills.”

Her slender fingers press into the small of my back as she swivels around and guides me towards the double doors. “No pills, my sweet.” She holds up the white mug. “Each resident has their own herbal mix tailored to the information we found in your blood. This is mine—I, of course, believe in and follow Briargrove’s teachings.”

“Um.” That still counts as imbibing, something I know little about. “No, thanks. I’ll see how I feel later.
