“Fate loves to fuck with you. Think you’ve got total control? That’s freaking hilarious.”

-Life (and Death) Lessons from Xavier Hollow

He’d been so close. So damn close! Wind whipped into the courtyard as Xavier’s fury spilled past his control. “Get your hand off her, brother!” A low, lethal snarl. “If you don’t, I’ll cut it off.”

Mercy’s head whipped toward Xavier. “Did you just say this guy is your brother?”

“One of many.” All of them were colossal pains in his ass. And Paxton hadn’t let go of Mercy. Xavier let claws burst from his fingertips, and he slashed down with his hand at his brother’s wrist.

Before he lost his hand, Paxton released Mercy and jumped back. “You could have hurt her! What if your claws had cut her instead of me?” He made a tsk sound as he shot a sympathetic glance Mercy’s way. “Do you see what a beast you have, my dear? And you were about to give your life to him! It’s so fortunate for you that I arrived when I did.”

How about unfortunate? Xavier pulled Mercy behind him. The better to shield her from Paxton’s BS. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Paxton smiled. It was his innocent, charming smile. The one that made him look extra harmless but actually meant he was at his most devious. “I went to a lovely, little ball last night. Traffic delayed me a bit so I arrived a wee bit tardy.” He lifted his hand and snapped his fingers. “We can’t all just snap about.”

“Still resent that, huh?” Xavier taunted. “Tough shit.”

His brother sniffed. “Imagine my surprise when I found blood-stained angel wings in the alley behind the building. And that blood I discovered? I couldn’t help but notice that it carried your stench, Xavier.”

“The world is just full of incredible surprises.” Xavier felt Mercy’s fingers flutter on his back. Paxton should not be here. “You’re not allowed in this space. It’s mine. You’re violating our treaty.”

“Don’t go getting so territorial and growly. Makes you seem like a beast.”

Oh, I will show you a beast.

Paxton rolled one shoulder as if he had no cares in the world. He typically didn’t. “Calm yourself. I’m only here for a brief visit. Just came to save the damsel from making a terrible mistake.” He craned to see around Xavier. “Hello, damsel.”

“I’m not a damsel,” Mercy snapped.

“Oh, are you not?” Paxton hummed, then added, “A lovely woman. In obvious distress. One who is being misled by a monster. Seems like a damsel to me.” Again with the tsk sound that grated like nails on a chalkboard. “You can’t trust Xavier. Despite what he’s told you, my brother isn’t here to save you. He can’t. He was born to destroy.”

That was Paxton’s big bombshell? Xavier laughed. He also stepped to the right, moving so that Mercy was at his side instead of behind him. For this part, he wanted them to be a united front. He caught her hand and brought it to his lips. A quick glance reassured him that her other hand remained closed over his coin.
