Twenty-Three

Anderson

Glancing distractedly through the tiny window in Camilla’s flat into the pre dawn, I frown.

“Yes, Father,” I say, hearing the sigh in my voice.

He doesn’t. He just drones on.

“Are you sure?” he asks. “I mean, you had your turn. It should have gone to someone else this time. One of your brothers. They’re all available, and they’ve all gone through their training. I mean, I still don’t understand why you were picked all those years ago over them. They’re older, smarter and have more confidence. The Slayer would probably still be alive if one of them had been in charge of her.”

There is no beating about the bush with my father. He is a cruel, unfeeling man whom I have tried desperately to cut out of my life since the day I turned eighteen and left to go to university. Oxford. Top of my class, I graduated with first-class honours and went on to study not only my PhD but a postdoctoral fellowship, neither of which any of my brothers achieved. In my father’s eyes, I am and always will be a failure.

“Not likely,” I comment, trying not to let the brutal remark get to me. “There wasn’t anything anyone could have done.” Remembering her ravaged body, pulled apart in her dreams makes me shudder and fill with sorrow.

“I doubt that. The Order must be insane to give the new Slayer’s Guardianship over to you.”

The urge to inform him that the reason it was given to me was because there was no one else qualified to handle what is undoubtedly the most precious Slayer the Order has ever come across, is overwhelming. Without an heir, she is the world’s last defence against the Monsters and handing her over to just anyone was out of the question. I understand that, even though at the start of this, I wished there had been someone else to take over. But there isn’t. Not only was my father passed over when Grenadine was called up, but so were my brothers, and not one of them will ever let it go.

“I really need to go,” I murmur when I hear Camilla moan.

She was out of it when we arrived back here via a transportation spell that is difficult to perform, and even harder to master precisely. She didn’t even comment on it. I expected a sarcastic remark about why we’ve been walking and driving everywhere, but it didn’t come. She was practically unconscious. It’s very worrying. The Vampire bite was supposed to cure the Succubus mating bite, but now I’m beginning to think the information is erroneous and that, somehow, the two combined have attacked her system, and she is on overload.

Crossing over to the bedroom, I hang up, not caring that my father is in the middle of a diatribe of some nonsense, turning the phone off before I quietly push open the door. Camilla is tangled up in the sheets, throwing herself all over the bed, muttering and mumbling to herself in her sleep.
