Anderson

Camilla and I lock gazes. She leaps off the ledge on which she was perched and crosses over to me. I meet her halfway, my heart pounding. That’s what I get for eavesdropping. It was unintentional, but still.

“No,” she says, shaking her head. “If we can see into the future, we can do this another way.”

“There is no other way. We have tried every permutation except this. It is the last and final possible action now made possible because you are here,” Kalabrax states, turning to face us, but leaning back against the roof ledge.

Her eyes bore into mine. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I do. To keep you safe.”

She grits her teeth. “There’s more. It’s not just me. The woman you met earlier…she is your daughter. Our daughter.”

I smile, having already come to that conclusion. I could see it when I thought about it. “I know. She looks just like you.”

“And you,” Camilla says with a smile, reaching up to cup my face. “She has your beautiful eyes.”

“When?” I croak out, unable to swallow for a moment as I become overwhelmed. I knew it was coming, Grenadine foresaw it, but I had no idea when or if it even really would.

She shrugs. “I’m not sure.”

“I need to be alive to create her,” I state to Kalabrax. “What do you know?”

“Camilla is with child now.”

“WHAT?” she thunders, turning on him with a puce face. “No! And how do you even know that?”

“We are telepathically linked,” he says. “I can connect to your thoughts and feelings. When I’m locked onto you, I can feel her presence.”

“Oh,” she says faintly.

“Telepathically linked?” I murmur, only slightly concerned by this.

He nods and straightens up. Coming over to us, he places his one hand on her head and the other on mine. Closing his eyes, I stare at him until I feel a jolt of such happiness and contentment, I know it’s true.

“You’re pregnant,” I say to her, wondering how she will feel about that.

Her face is pale, and she looks like she is going to faint. I take her hands tightly, imploring her to say something.

“Wow,” she huffs eventually. “The hits just keep on coming.”

“Are you not happy?” I venture carefully.

She looks at me with a feeling of deep sorrow. “Of course I am, I’m …I wasn’t expecting this so soon.”

“I love you,” I blurt out, taking her in my arms. “I love you so much, it hurts.”

She chokes back a sob. “I love you too, Anderson. I was pregnant before, a long time ago. I had an abortion. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before. Please don’t hate me.”

I pull back slightly and wipe the tears from her eyes with a hanky I pull out of my jacket pocket. Smiling, I chide her. “I could never hate you. You did what you felt you needed to.”

“It was necessary because it was dangerous,” Kalabrax says quietly. “Had you birthed the child at the time, you would’ve died. Your mother had to ensure that didn’t happen.
