Scene Eight
8.00pm. It is raining heavily against the window. Marie is alone, working. Elvis enters; he is wet through.
Marie Iâm just finishing up. But then the rain.
Elvis Yeah. Are you getting far?
Marie I have absolutely no idea. How about you?
Elvis How do you mean?
Marie I assume youâve come back to do your bike?
Elvis Yeah.
Beat.
Marie Seriously. Stay. The room might warm up with two people in it.
Elvis I was coming out my flat, and I was in the lift, just going down and that, and I was thinking about the emergency button. Thinking if Iâdâve done what you did.
Marie Okay.
Elvis By accident. But not by mistake, kinda. Did she hate you?
Marie Sometimes, not. She just decided I quit everything. I got a D in my English A-Level just because the Wife of Bath was shit. And she called that quitting. (Beat.) She was alright, when she was on something. Anti-depressants, or ⦠And you know when you look at someone, and their eyes are just swimming in medicine? And theyâre far away. But then sheâd come back and ⦠Even dad said he wanted to kill her sometimes. Maybe thatâs why heâs having so much trouble; yâknow, moving her stuff out.
Marie goes to the filing cabinet and takes out her towel. She holds it out for him.
Marie So. Whatâs your favourite â
Elvis (Immediately.) âHound Dogâ. Because when Elvis Presley was first on the Steve Allen Show, Steve Allen thought Elvis was âtalentless and absurdâ, and used to do things to make him look stupid and that. But Elvis didnât care, and I like that, and now I only know about Steve Allen because I know about Elvis. No-one knows about Elvis because of Steve Allen, do they?
Marie No. (Pause.) Itâs a good song.
Elvis Yeah. Itâs okay.
Marie (Pause.) Sorry, Iâm going to take my shoes off, theyâre killing me. (She does.)
Elvis Do you know who I hate?
Elvis looks at her bare feet. Marie catches him.
Elvis I hate Honey.
Marie Do you remember that day she didnât come in?
Elvis Yeah, that was good. (Beat.) Sometimes. I want to tell her to shut up. I want to tell her to (Mouths/whispers)âp i s s o f fâ.
Marie (Mouths/whispers.) To piss off?
Elvis I want to say: âPiss off, Honey.â Like that.
Marie Yeah?
Elvis Thatâs what I want to say, anyway.
Marie Hang on.
Marie puts Elvis is his seat at his desk. Marie sits in Honeyâs chair.
Marie Iâm Honey.
Elvis (Laughs.)
Marie âRight: you know the difference between commitment and involvement, do you? Pigs and chickens. Elvis, whatâs the difference between pigs and chickens?â
Long pause. Marie eggs him on.
Elvis Piss off.
Marie With the fingers.
Elvis (Sticks up two fingers.) Piss off, Honey. (Laughs.) Piss off, / Honey!
Marie Gold star. Bravo.
Elvis (Says something inaudible.)
Marie Huh?
Elvis (Laughs.)
Marie Go on.
Elvis (Laughs.)
Marie I wonât be offended.
Elvis (Nods.) Sheâs a âcâ.
Marie A what, sorry?
Elvis Sheâs a âcâ?
Marie And whatâs that?
Elvis A âcâ-unt.
Marie A cunt?
Elvis Maybe.
Marie Say it then. Be proud. What is she?
Elvis Sheâs a cunt.
Marie Sheâs a cunt.
Elvis Sheâs a cunt. Sheâs a cunt.
Elvis knocks over Honeyâs chair.
