LUCK

Some people are simply lucky. They do not work hard, or take excessive risks, or even cheat, but just got the right winds in their sails to push them up. And sometimes the wind pushes them so far up that it requires more than a lifetime to fall back, making their rise seem permanent for practical purposes.

And some people are simply unlucky. However hard they work, whatever they do, the winds against them can be so strong that they may never succeed. It goes without argument that, losing through such bad luck is neither deserved by the individual, nor is acceptable by the society, meaning that it has to be compensated by the society through a social security system.

In principle, as losing through pure bad luck is undeserved and unacceptable, winning through pure good luck should also be undeserved and unacceptable, meaning that it should be taxed away. However, although winning through good luck is not deserved, it is still accepted by the society, at least for three reasons. First, there is no practical way of measuring the effect of good luck behind any success. Second, even in principle, the society seems to accept winning through good luck simply because there is no unethical or illegal behaviour behind it, and it is totally out of control of the individual. And finally, everybody wants to keep the hope that one day good luck may find them, and in case that happens, the society will not tax it away. Nobody lets their dreams die first.
