CHAPTER 15

Amelia

Amelia just stood there, completely frozen as to what she was supposed to do in a situation such as this. As a servant she was used to seating herself, but as the hostess, Georgie was supposed to have assisted her. In his drunken state, he had either forgotten, or just simply hadn’t cared, and lazily sat himself down before anyone else in the party had sat. But once again, Mr. Wynters had saved her. He had noticed Georgie’s foolishness, and quickly remedied the situation, none the wiser to what had occurred. She could have kissed the man for watching out for her, and she would have to make sure he knew how appreciative she was to him.

The servants entered the room and began placing food onto the guests plates, leaving the rest of the food on platters around the table. Polite chatter commenced around the room, the party all seemingly pleased with the food and the company surrounding them. Amelia smiled at herself in satisfaction with how well the night was progressing thus far, as she took small bites of her food. Though the night was proceeding well, she still hadn’t the appetite to eat a great deal, and her nerves were raw from having to be at the center of attention. She had a nagging suspicion that Georgie’s behavior was going to cause trouble as she watched his glass continue to empty, and her suspicions were confirmed when he had the servants switch to bourbon halfway through his meal. His speech was slurred and his laughter raucous, causing the guests to stare at his dismissal of acceptable behavior.
