Chapter Sixteen

“You bought me a car?” Vivian spun around in Richard’s garage to see him, Maddy, Evy, Sergio, and Julia all staring at the luxury SUV with wide eyes and smiles. “Richard, you bought me a car. A whole car. This is not—”

“No.” He raised a hand and stepped forward. “I bought myself a car, a midsize hybrid SUV with excellent safety ratings and many features that are popular with families who have small children.”

Vivian was trying to remain calm. “So this is for you?”

Richard shrugged. “I mean, if you decide that you want to trade your Tesla for a while—or forever—then we can do that.” He smiled innocently. “I didn’t buy you a car. That would be overstepping.”

Maddy raised a hand. “I did warn you about the fixer thing.”

Vivian’s brain was swirling again. Part of her was massively relieved—she’d been dreading the car-buying process—and part of her knew this was not a fair trade. “This is too nice for my Tesla.”

“I think you’re undervaluing the appeal of electric vehicles, Vivian. I don’t have one in my garage yet; it’s far past time. Think of the gas I’ll save when I have to drive to LA.”

Vivian looked around the six-car garage at Casa de Lirio, taking in an off-road vehicle, a sleek sports car, a Land Rover, a vintage Jaguar, and a sturdy golf cart. “I guess you don’t.”

Julia stepped forward. “I think this is a great idea. Richard did all the research for you, so if you don’t like it—”

“I can take it back,” he said. “The dealership told me it wasn’t an issue to try it out for a few days.”

“Dealerships don’t do that,” Vivian said.

Richard shrugged. “I’m a good customer.”

She walked to the low-slung SUV, which reminded her of a much fancier version of her parents’ old station wagon. She tried to imagine all the things she’d need to pack for a simple trip to the market once Henry was here. Stroller. Diaper bag. Changing table? No, that was ridiculous, that lived at the house.

“This is too much.” She ran a hand along the cool green surface of the car. “It’s a nice color.”

“They had other ones. If you wanted to trade.”

She looked over her shoulder. “Did my dad say something about the car this morning?”

“He does not mind trading cars with you, but he worried that you were getting uncomfortable driving.” Richard rushed to the driver’s door and opened it. “This car has adjustable pedals so you can scoot the seat farther back and still reach the gas and brake.”

Vivian pursed her lips. “And you thought that would be really useful for you?”

“I think it would be useful for anyone.” He smiled. “Trade cars with me. If you like it, keep it for a while or forever. It’s one less thing for you to do.”

“You know I hate buying cars.” She felt herself tearing up and sniffed.

“Are those happy tears or I’m-angry-and-frustrated tears?”

Vivian heard everyone else behind them scurry away, leaving her and Richard alone.

He bent down and wiped a tear away with his thumb.
