How Long Does Grieving Last?

The grief period is different for everyone. A person’s personality as well as family, cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs and practices can influence how one responds to loss. It can take many months for the painful feelings and thoughts to go away. Grief has its own timeline. But, over time, grief will begin to decrease. A grieving person will likely have good days and bad days. And it’s normal and expected that the grief might return “out of the blue”; that’s part of the grief process. Important dates, like anniversaries or birthdays, can bring back intense feelings of grief.
