Even though Preston had kept his distance from Miles and Jasper, heâd heard their conversation. Miles had offered to take them to the warehouse where he and the assassins lived before, but Preston had thought it was because he was Milesâs mate. In part, that was probably the case, but he couldnât ignore the way Miles had spoken to Jasper.
Preston didnât know a lot about Miles, and even though Miles had told him heâd been in a lab, too, he hadnât entirely realized what that meant until now. Heâd seen what Miles could do, and it had shocked him, but it had been easy to ignore in the heat of the moment. Now, Preston had to face it.
Miles wasnât human. Miles wasnât even a normal shifter. Like Jasper, heâd been experimented on, and heâd been changed. No matter how much Preston wanted to snatch up Jasper and go back home to their life, he wasnât an idiot. Jasper would never be able to go back, and that meant Preston wouldnât, either. He wasnât leaving Jasper behind, not after almost losing him. Besides, from what he knew, the warehouse where the council assassins lived was probably the best place for Jasper to be right now. They personally knew what heâd gone through, and theyâd be able to help. Unfortunately, Preston could do neither of those things, and while he wanted to be there for his best friend, in this case, it meant allowing other people to be there for Jasper.
It looked like he and Jasper were going to move in with a bunch of professional assassins.
He still wasnât completely sure what to think of Miles and the others. Logically, he understood wanting someone to die, especially after what heâd seen today. He was horrified to realize that he was glad the scientists whoâd hurt Jasper were dead. Theyâd never be able to hurt anyone else, although for Jasper, it was too late. But if Preston was horrified by the way he felt now, how would he feel if he killed someone himself?
Wishing someone was dead and being happy about it was very different from actually killing them. Would he be able to share a living space with people who did that for a living? Would he be able to either accept it or ignore it long enough for Jasper to heal?
But even once Jasper felt better, where would they go? Jasper was very much not human anymore, and anyone looking at him could see that. Heâd never be able to find a normal job, and Preston doubted anyone would want to date him, although he was ready to beat up anyone who had something to say about that.
âYou look like youâre thinking hard,â Ox drawled.
Preston jerked away from him. âI didnât hear you come up.â
Ox grinned. âWeird, because Iâm not a council assassin, and Iâm not very light on my feet. I guess youâre too focused on someone else.â
âWe found my best friend.â
Ox looked amused. âYou sure did. Heâs not who I was talking about, though.
