CHAPTER ELEVEN

Colt’s ears were beginning to ring. Other than a run to the vending machines, he’d been on the phone since he arrived, and it was approaching seven o’clock. The office had pretty much cleared out, except for a few stragglers.

“I can’t wait to meet you in person, Mr. Coachman. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

He scanned his laptop screen for Coachman, entered number of guests on the spreadsheet and rubbed his eyes. The sum total of what he ate all day was a protein shake at breakfast and a candy bar and bag of chips out of the vending machine. He really needed to talk to someone about getting some healthier snacks in there. Other than a quick strategy meeting, he’d hardly had an opportunity to talk to Mel. He glanced in her direction and found she was on the phone, but waving him over.

“Hey, Dex.” The big man looked up from his seat on a couch near the exit. “Why don’t you call it a day?” Colt rose from his chair and met him at the door, shaking his hand.

“Yes, Mr. Remkus. I’ll check in with security before I leave.”

“Sounds good. Thanks.” He watched Dex walk down the hall, his shoulders seeming to span the distance between the walls. He turned and entered Mel’s office.

“And anything with shellfish or nuts in it needs to be clearly labeled. I don’t want any problems for our guests with allergies. Hold on a minute, Mr. Remkus walked in.” She covered the receiver. “Do you have any problem with meeting the caterers at Lonestar around eight on Wednesday, to iron out the placement of tents and tables?”

“No. That should work fine.”

He checked out her office while he waited for her. Like his, it was divided into a sort of casual sitting area near the door where she could talk to clients with more comfort, and her desk area, with a low bank of filing cabinets behind her, leaving the view uninterrupted.

“Eight on Wednesday should be fine, Pierre. Do you need directions? ...Great. See you then. And be sure to email me the final menu with ingredients listed, please. Thank you. ...You, too.” She hung up the phone. “Colt.” Her face lit up. “I had a great idea last night.”

“Okay.”

She stood and walked around the desk while spelling out her plan. “What if you put on a small show at the gala? Like a mini-concert.”

He frowned. “But, I thought I was trying to lose the rock star image.”

“You are, in a way, but...” She put her hands behind her and grasped the desk. “I thought about that. You spent a lot of time and money creating that image, right?” She bit her lip.

“I guess.”

“Why not let that work to our advantage? It’s not like we’re a company making appliances or automobiles. We’re in the music business. And most of our clients are, too. You’re hugely successful as a performer, and that’s something none of the other CEO wannabes can say. It’s what makes you stand out from the pack.
