“You’re … cooking for me?”

Talon turned the stove on and set the pan on top of it, smirking a little.

“What, don’t trust my cooking skills?”

She laughed. “When we pulled up to your place, I figured you wanted to change or something before going out. I didn’t think you’d be making me a whole meal.”

He glanced at her, amused.

“Well, consider yourself lucky because I don’t cook for anyone.”

“Wow, he’s really laying it on thick, huh.”

Talon let out a laugh and poured pre-cooked rice into the pan. He wasn’t much of a cook himself, only really knowing a handful of recipes that kept him from starving or wasting his fortune away on take-out every night.

But he wanted this to be special. He didn’t want to keep wooing Cassie with just money and fancy restaurants. He wanted to show her that he was serious about this. That she was worth someone taking the extra time to care for her.

She sat patiently on the barstool across from him, making small talk as he cooked them up a simple stir-fry. He smiled to himself, hearing her stomach grumble over the sound of the oil simmering inside of the pan.

“Want to grab us some wine?”

She hopped off her stool. “Thank god it’s finally five o’clock.”

He laughed again and plated their food, shutting off the burner and letting the pan cool while they ate. He followed after her into the living room, nodding to the wet bar by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

He set their plates down and sat on the couch, looking up when she offered him a wine glass.

“Thanks.”

She sat next to him, her leg pressing up against his. “This smells amazing.”

“Hopefully, it doesn’t taste too terrible.”

She nudged him. “I thought you said you know how to cook?”

“No, I said I don’t cook for anyone. I said nothing about my skills in the kitchen.”

She snickered, leaning into him as she took a couple of bites. “Mmm.”

He felt himself relax. “Good?”

She gave him a thumbs up.

They leaned back on his couch together and ate peacefully, talking lightly in between bites. It was a nice conversation, even if Talon felt like he was holding back from certain subjects that they navigated.

Honestly, he didn’t have a clue how he was going to approach the subject of his family, who he really was, and who she was to him. How did you even get into something like that with a human?

He had no idea. So instead, he put on a movie and let them both enjoy each other’s company for the time being.

Once Cassie was done eating, she set her plate on the coffee table in front of the couch and scooted back into her spot, moving until she was comfortably tucked in next to him. He set his plate to the side, hooking his arm under her legs and pulling them into his lap.

She glanced at him, raising a brow.

Gently, he glided his hand over her smooth legs. Rubbing around the tight muscles in her calves. She sighed softly and relaxed into him.
