Twelve

I checked on Nicole before I left my mom’s house and found her fast asleep in my old bed. Freya was snuggled against her, and she looked up when I peeked inside. I motioned her forward, and she jumped from the bed.

Quietly, I closed the door behind us and picked up my familiar. I hugged her and kissed her head. “Thank you for watching out for my friend.”

Our friend.

I smiled and nodded. “I’d leave you here with her, but I need to see Corey, and you’re my security system.”

She purred, and I could tell that she liked this new role that she’d taken on. It wasn’t until I sat behind the wheel of Gideon’s car that I fully realized something that should have been obvious long before then.

I gathered Freya to me and looked into her eyes that sparkled with love. “When I asked how you’d learned to communicate better with me, you’d said it was me, which didn’t make a lot of sense because we hadn’t been practicing much. But it’s not the practice that’s opened this world to us, is it? It’s that I’ve been using my magic more.”

She butted her head against my chin. Yes.

An incredible giddy feeling erupted inside me. “Because of that, everything that comes with my magic is getting stronger. Gideon could speak to you because he’s powerful. And now, I’m getting more powerful, too.”

Yes.

I shook my head as regret replaced that giddy feeling. “I’m so sorry, Freya. We could have been talking all this time if I wouldn’t have turned my back on much of my gift. I always felt I was doing the Goddess’s bidding by honoring Mother Earth and being kind to others. I didn’t realize there was this whole other side. It’s cost us both, hasn’t it?”

Her purrs grew louder. I am yours, and you are mine.

Sudden moisture in my eyes surprised me. I was lucky that Freya had come to me many years ago. Some weren’t so lucky like Vivian who’d only recently found Nooni, even though I wished the man-stealing witch didn’t deserve her. Hettie Huber’s first familiar had run away years ago, afraid of her werewolf husband. And Nicole had yet to find hers. Some witches never did. “I feel like I’ve wasted so much time. We could have been talking for years.”

She gave me a charming slow blink. We have.

Freya was right. “Dang it, lady. Why are you so much smarter than me?”

She leaned forward and licked my chin before she squirmed to be free. When she was seated in the passenger seat, she turned to me. Corey.

“That’s right. Corey. I need to stop wasting time regretting the past and get on with helping Nicole. Let’s do it.”

I called his number to see if he was still at Nicole’s old house or if he’d gone back to the station. He answered on the second ring and invited me back to the scene of the crime. I didn’t particularly want to return to the source of my best friend’s pain, but if that’s what it took, I’d do it.
