As it turned out, Missy was not the only one coming into control of her powers. Ali had begun to as well, although her abilities were nowhere near the level of mine and Steph’s. For over a week, she trained vigorously with us at Essie’s, showing promise where she hadn’t previously.

A puff of smoke shot out of her fingers, and she grunted in frustration, collapsing back to her knees.

“Why can’t I light it yet?” she whimpered. The endless trail of smoke without fire was taking its toll on her, but instantly, her eyes darted toward Essie, and she backpedaled. “I’ll keep trying. I’m sure I’ll get it soon.”

Essie snorted and fixed her attention on me.

“And what have you been working on?” she asked.

“I’ve been working on the same thing as everyone else,” I replied, cocking my head curiously.

What am I supposed to be working on?

“You must work harder, faster, stronger,” she urged.

“I’m doing what I can,” I grumbled. Essie’s incessant hounding was making me irritable, but she didn’t appear to pick up on my annoyance.

“You don’t quite understand what’s at stake. You can’t be wishy washy about matters.”

“No,” I conceded. “I don’t understand what’s at stake, because you haven’t told us anything.”

I eyed her pointedly, and she balked, reading my innermost thoughts. In return, I read hers, if only the spirit.

Don’t even think about posing that question to me.

But did I dare ask her about the prophecy? After all this time, no one had bothered to tell us anything. Maybe it was up to me to get the answers we needed.

I still wasn’t ready to know, and I was sure my friends felt the same way. There was a reason it was being kept from us, and once we knew, we couldn’t unlearn the truth. For all of Essie’s squawking, I had no doubt that she had our best interests at heart.

“I’ve been working on getting laid,” Steph offered brightly, taking the wind out of the mounting tension in Essie’s living room. I guffawed as Missy snickered. Essie was unimpressed.

“Such crassness,” the matriarch sputtered, rising from her spot. “I’ll see about tea.”

This time, no one offered to help her, but I suspected she wanted some space away from us. Her absence from the room lifted a small weight.

“Are you seeing someone?” Ali asked Steph, taking her earlier confession literally. “I didn’t hear about this.”

“Somebodies,” she chirped. “I’ve got my hand in a few pies.”

“What? Who?” Ali demanded.

“It depends on the day,” Stephanie giggled. “There is no shortage of available men on the apps, you know.”

“Good for you, girl!” Missy grinned proudly. “That’s the way to live. Beats the hell out of going back to the devil you know.”

I groaned. “You’re seeing Patrick again?”

Missy shook her head vehemently. “No. I’m banging Patrick again. There’s very little looking involved.”

Ali blushed, and I tittered.

“You can’t stand him!” Ali cried. “That’s why you broke up! Are you two thinking about getting back together?”

Poor Ali. She’d married her high school sweetheart and had something of an old-fashioned view of sex and relationships.
