Mordecai

The man attacked Jasmine before Mordecai even saw it coming. He figured that the man would come after him and the woman would try to get Jasmine if the couple was going to attack. Normally people like that just want to throw their weight around and intimidate others. Apparently, just like with mundane humans, some men had absolutely no code of honor.

He was shocked when the man hit Jasmine. However, this wasn’t like the last scene at the club, where he was too far away to do anything. He was right here, and he was prepared to destroy this man. He elbowed him in the throat and told him to pick himself up and go back to where they came from. Mordecai had settled for a softer approach, because he didn’t want to upset Jasmine.

After the man hit the ground, Mordecai clenched his fists so hard that his knuckles were pure white. It took every ounce of courage to walk away.

Jasmine was just standing there, watching the situation. Her face was smeared with bright red streaks from when she had wiped away the blood.

Taking a deep breath, he unclenched hands, which was almost a painful process. Mordecai lifted her face so he could look at her mouth. Her lip was cut and it was swelling up quickly. The man’s large hand had also managed to bruise her right eye, and it was quickly swelling.

“I’m going to…” Mordecai started toward the man, who was struggling to get up.

“No, don’t. They aren’t worth it. They are just a couple of drama queens looking for trouble, and we don’t need it. We’re leaving tomorrow, and these people aren’t,” Jasmine said. She tugged gently on his hair and smiled the best that she could. “Let’s just go back and have a glass of wine. Or a bottle.”

Mordecai nodded, knowing that she was right.

Once again, Jasmine and Mordecai turned to leave. The man jumped up and pushed Jasmine as hard as he could and sent her sprawling in the dirt. She hit the ground with a loud umph, as the air was knocked out of her lungs.

With a loud growl, Mordecai spun around and kicked the man in one of his knees. Jasmine winced as she heard the knee crack. Mordecai then jumped on the man and began punching his face over and over again.

Mordecai’s heart was racing a million miles an hour and he wasn’t even seeing the man’s face as he pummeled him, over and over again. All he really saw was Jasmine’s bloody and bruised face and then her falling to the ground. There was absolutely no way in the world that he was going to let anyone get away with hurting his woman.

For almost his entire life, Mordecai had held in his anger. He always “turned the other cheek,” because he remembered that was what his parents were always preaching. However, he had turned enough cheeks. All the rage that he had been feeling for a long time poured out of his fist and onto the man’s face.
