I’d brought back the respirator mask from the Ron job as well. I wore it now as I resumed preparing for Héctor, and the awful possibility of the Bubonic Weasel.

There was a heap of ancient Gourmet magazines crammed in beside my dining table. I assaulted it. It was like spading into an archeological site of my past with Cosima—and from before then, when my ex-competitor was the man on the scene. To relieve the agitation, I sought my usual online distractions. Where I came across a documentary: Packrat, by filmmaker Kris Britt Montag. It was a portrait of her hoarder father. There was a long interview with Randy Frost, and with Ron, too. Ron, in fact, was listed as an executive producer of the film. The Disaster Master talked from his office. I paused the video on my laptop. His office sure looked . . . cluttered. Did Ron have a problem himself? I’d asked at Jackson Diner. No, he’d retorted: he had a time issue ’cause his head was such a fount of ideas!

I resumed the video.

“As you can see from my office behind me,” the Disaster Master told the interviewer, “I have a bit of a disposophobia problem myself.”

My jaw dropped under my respirator mask.
