When the lesson was over, I trudged back down the stairs. Lior waited at the base of the tower, sitting under a tree on the edge of the park area in the centre of the Five Towers, bundled up in a bright red scarf. I loomed over xem until xe looked up from the book in xyr hand.

“We cannot do this outside again,” Lior insisted, teeth chattering together in the rapidly freezing air.

“I might know a place…”

“Let’s go!” Lior creaked to xyr feet.

I grabbed xyr hand and led xem across campus.

“How did you find this place?” Lior asked, cuddling the dark brown beverage xe had ordered while I had been finding a table. I was half convinced Lior had only sent me away to stop me from spending my own money. The Guardian stipend paid my rent and a little wage but nothing compared to working full time at Jhoto’s.

“Kalik brought me here — and before you start with your eyebrows,” I pointed at said eyebrows, “we just had lunch.”

“Sounds like a date.”

“It was a work break.”

Lior threw xyr head back and let out a single barked laugh. “You know what a break is?”

“Why does everyone think I don’t understand what a break is?”

Lior tilted xyr head to one side. “I’m just teasing you.”

“You and Kalik both,” I grumbled.

Lior and I talked over Holding spell-songs – although I didn’t know why Lior was learning Holding Songs when xyr focus was supposed to be commercial spell-singing.

Eventually our food arrived at the table, the server apologising for the delay. Lior and I both waved off her apology and told her we weren’t in any hurry.

“Oh! I nearly forgot! This woman came by the club yesterday asking to see you,” Lior announced.

“What woman?”

“I told her you didn’t work there anymore.”

“That’s it?”

“Well, yeah. I don’t know this woman and I figured with what I know of your long and torturous history.” Xe touched the back of xyr hand to xyr head.

“Don’t be so dramatic.” I tapped xyr hand to pull it back down.

“Okay, fine. With everything that’s happened in the past few weeks, I figured giving out info about your location to any old stranger who happens to know your name and that you might have once worked at Jhoto’s Bar and Club, wasn’t a great idea.”

“Fair point. Thanks Lior.” But who on Terya had that woman been? And why was she looking for me?

“And then I found out why Jen the bartender has been taking so much time off sick.”

“Gossip,” I accused.

“I thought the person who covered for Jen so often might care,” Lior sniffed. “Excuse me if I got it wrong.”

I sighed, giving in to my curiosity. “Tell me?”
