Chapter 9 – Hunter

Hunter felt like he was floating when he walked home that night. Why the hell was he feeling so good? They hadn’t resolved any of the concerns he’d had about their professional relationship going forwards… if anything, he’d made things even worse by kissing her in the middle of their conversation. But he hadn’t been able to help it. Looking at her, standing there with her eyes blazing and her meticulously maintained shell of civility scattered in pieces all around her… what else could he have done but kissed her?

They’d parted ways not long after—she’d mumbled something about having a lot of planning to do before tomorrow’s session, and he’d realized with a guilty thrill that he’d completely forgotten about the program. There were only two more weeks of the program to go, and next week would be a busy one, featuring several of the excursions the kids had been planning to spots around the city. He found, to his surprise, that he was really looking forward to it. It was amazing what they’d done with just a little bit of guidance from Diana… and the permission to take control of the project, to lead it themselves. A word he’d always hated kept coming into his mind… but he had to admit, it was accurate. Diana had empowered these kids to take control of their own lives.

Of course, it wouldn’t fix the system they were going to be contending with for the rest of their lives, wouldn’t change anything about the hardships they’d face. He couldn’t leave that alone… couldn’t help feeling resentful when Diana talked about applying for scholarships for college, about the grades they’d need to work towards in school if they wanted not only to get into their chosen schools, but to be able to afford to go in the first place. It wasn’t fair that they’d have to work twice as hard as the rich kids just to get the same opportunities.

But what Diana had said was revolving around and around in his head, anchoring itself in the very real stories of these kids. Take Bea, for example. She had an incredible creativity hiding behind her shy exterior, a keen curiosity and a gift for writing that could see her doing amazing work in journalism someday. Diana wanted to help make that happen, so she was looking into internships, work experience and school programs that would help her towards that goal. Hunter’s knee-jerk instinct was negativity. It was unfair that Bea would have to work so hard to get into a good college, that she’d have to scrimp and save every cent she could, that so much of her effort and energy would have to go towards survival while competitors from richer backgrounds could just sail by without thinking about it.
