Chapter 15

Victor watched Sharon's delicate and tired frame lean against the window. He wished she would lean against his chest and fall asleep like that. There wasn't ever a woman that tempted him enough to date for pleasure. Not until Sharon. But he was sure-- after only two days of working for her-- that he could easily fall all the way for her if he wasn't careful.

But he couldn't risk his father's company. There was no way. As much as he hated it, David was right. Victor worked with a lot of very conservative people who would not approve of an interracial couple. Even his father hadn't married an African-American woman when he needed to seem liberal. He only married one of a different class. And if they were to get together at all, the dynamic of their whole relationship would change forever. Who was to say they would work so efficiently if they were to start dating? Or if they broke up, what would happen then? It wasn't an option. He couldn't expose the bank to even the slightest risk.

When they pulled up in front of Sharon's apartment building there was a bump and Victor heard the driver mutter a curse. He rapped on the glass separating them from the driver. “Is everything all right?” he called out.

“It could be, sir. Let me check,” the driver said, getting out of the car.

Sharon and Victor waited while the driver went around to check out the tires. When he opened the back door, his face was grim. “Bad news, I'm afraid,” he said. “We ran over a pile of broken glass and both the front and back tires on this side are cut, and I only have one spare. We will have to wait for a tow truck.”

Victor muttered a curse and he got out to look the tires over. Sharon got out behind him and knelt down, bunching her skirt up to keep it from getting dirty. He tried not to notice the new sight of bare thighs as he looked at the flat tires.

“Is there a jack in the trunk?” she asked the driver. “My friend Rickie lives a block away and has been selling his car for parts. I think he has a couple tires left.”

“It doesn't matter, anyway,” said Victor. “How are we supposed to change the tire?”

Sharon shot him a look. “Don't tell me you don't know how to change a tire,” she said.

Of course he didn't know how to change a tire. Victor didn't even drive, not after he had gotten his license. But he didn't want to admit it so he said. “So you know how to change a tire?”

“I learned when I was sixteen,” she said. She turned back to the driver. “Is there a jack in the car?” she asked.

The driver fidgeted uncomfortably. “Truth be told, miss, it broke a couple days ago and I haven't gotten it replaced.”

Victor glared at the man. What the hell was he paying him for if
