Baron Theodor von Wrede was born in Wandsbeck, a suburb of Hamburg, on November 3, 1888. He entered the army as a Fahnenjunker in the 5th Ulan Regiment on March 7, 1907, and received his commission the following year. He fought in World War I, served in the Reichswehr, and was a major when Hitler came to power. Later, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel (October 1, 1933), colonel (August 1, 1935), major general (April 1, 1939), and lieutenant general (March 1, 1941). A member of the military attaché branch in the 1930s, he was appointed military attaché to Budapest in 1937, and held this post until after the Polish campaign. On October 26, 1939, he assumed command of the 393rd Infantry Division, which he led until May 7, 1940. This Landesschuetzen division, which was then in the process of forming, consisted mainly of men over the age of 45 and was used as an occupation/guard force in Poland. On June 6, he assumed command of the 290th Infantry Division, which he led in the final stages of the French campaign. It was posted on the Atlantic coast until January 1941, when it redeployed to East Prussia.
