The heat had changed just so far that instead of sitting in the shadow they sat in the sun; which was still hot enough to paint their faces red and yellow, and to colour great sections of the earth. The flasks of hot tea were passed round and round, and a delicious feeling of cheerful comfort ran through their veins.

"There's nothing so nice as tea!" said Mrs Thornbury.

"Nothing half so nice" said Helen speaking more quickly than usual. "Can't you remember as a child chopping up hay and pretending it was tea and getting scolded by nurses—why I can't imagine except that nurses are such brutes, won't allow pepper instead of salt though there's no earthly harm in it—weren't your nurses just the same?"

She began the sentence seeing Susan advancing; she went on with it while Susan made her way into the group and sat down by Helen's side. A minute later Mr Venning strolled up from the other direction,

"Oh how nice!" said Susan drinking.

"What have you been doing to that old chap's grave?" said Arthur in the tone of one who will laugh whatever answer is made.

"We have tried to make him forget his misfortune in having died three hundred years ago," said Mr Perrott.

"It would be awful—to be dead!" said Evelyn M.

"I wonder if any of us realises what it would be like to be dead?"

"It's quite easy to imagine" said Hewet. "When you go to bed to night, fold your hands so—breathe slower and slower" he lay back and shut his eyes. "Now I shall never move again."

"This is a horrible exhibition!" cried Mrs Thornbury.

"More cake for us!" cried Arthur.

"I assure you, it's quite easy to imagine," said Hewet, sitting up, and securing the cake.
