Maximus

“Are Nox and Zane mates?”

I snorted as I glanced at Kym, shaking my head. “They’re close friends. They have an on-again-off-again arrangement that everyone knows about but knows better than to talk about. Zane is great at providing a verbal lashing to anyone who doesn’t respect their privacy.”

Kym smiled softly. “Yeah, I can see that happening. Zane is prickly, but really protective of those they care about, right?”

It was fascinating how accurately Kym had read Zane, and I realized there was still a lot I didn’t know about my mate.

“Is everyone here as old as you?” Kym asked, and I raised a brow at him.

“Are you calling me old, little fox?”

He smirked at me and shrugged, his amber eyes bright with mischief. “Maybe.”

I growled playfully, pouncing at him, and he shrieked as he took off at a run. I followed him across the courtyard as he ran back toward the villa, his laughter bringing a smile to my face.

He glanced back at me and grinned widely, running straight on ahead and slamming into Lionel, who immediately wrapped his arms and wings around him to keep him from falling.

I hurried over to them as Kym straightened up and blinked up at Lionel. “Whoa.” He turned to me when I drew close and whispered softly, though I was sure Lionel heard him clearly, “I thought Afterworld is the heavenly realm. What’s an angel doing here?”

Lionel chuckled softly, and Kym went beet red as he realized he’d been heard. It was easy to understand his reaction. With his wavy hair—now a chestnut brown instead of the platinum blond he’d been sporting last year—muscular build, and snow-white wings, Lionel did look like the angels from human myths. He’d been a phoenix in his previous life, and for some reason, his wings had manifested snow white instead of red-orange in his second life.

“You must be Kym. It’s nice to finally meet you. Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not an angel. I’m simply a soul collector like your mate, though I’ll admit I’m way prettier.”

I growled at him as I pulled Kym away from him, and he laughed. Kym leaned back into me, making me smile, and I placed my palms on his hips.

“All right, I need to take off. Got a pickup scheduled. Kym, if you ever want to take a flight around Otherworld, let me know.” With a wink at my mate, he took off at a run, jumping into the air before he dived off the side of the cliff and disappeared into the mist below, making Kym gasp.

“Don’t worry. The mist at the edge of the cliffs leads to the human realm. Those who can fly sometimes like to take that route.”

“He seemed nice. Bit of a flirt, though.”

I chuckled as I squeezed him to me. If it had been anyone else, I would’ve ripped them a new one for flirting with him right in front of me, but it was Lionel. He was family, and flirting was his default setting, the only language he knew.
