The last thing Dane had expected was for Sebastian and Taylor to believe him without hesitation. Well, that wasn’t the last thing he’d expected. The last thing he’d expected was to have Sebastian standing in front of him, considering he’d thought the man was dead.

He’d known the Symonds family wasn’t exactly close. The entire pride had known it, had gossiped over it. Some pride members thought Beta Symonds had killed Sebastian and buried his body, even though there had never been any proof. The fact that they thought it could have happened spoke volumes about the family, though.

“I’m not surprised,” Sebastian said as he sat in the only empty chair on Dane’s side of the desk. Oliver settled into his lap, and Dane couldn’t look away.

They had to be mated. They were so comfortable with each other and with showing the rest of the people in the room their relationship. Dane wanted that too. He wanted all of it, with Max.

Max, who was still holding his hand. Max, who was by his side, anchoring him, keeping him in the moment. Dane knew he’d be panicking if it weren’t for Max. He wouldn’t have had the courage to tell Kameron what had happened to him, wouldn’t be able to face Sebastian and Taylor.

Taylor pouted and sat on the edge of Kameron’s desk. “Why am I always the one who’s without a chair?”

“Because you’re slow,” Oliver said. “You should have taken the chair before we did.”

“It’s like dealing with children,” Kameron muttered.

“Tell me about it,” Sebastian agreed. “Tay, can we focus on what’s happening here? We need to find out what Dad did. He’s still the beta, and Alpha Deker needs to know.”

“How do you know he isn’t aware of what your father did to me?” Dane asked.

“Because he’s a better alpha than Alpha Bolan ever was. He’s more confident, more open-minded. My father is still beta, but Alpha Deker isn’t as easily influenced as Alpha Bolan was. He wouldn’t have kept him if he knew.”

“That’s true,” Sebastian said. “I went back to Laurel a few years ago, when the council was recruiting alphas for its network. My father wasn’t happy to see me.”

Oliver snorted. “That’s an understatement. He told you he wouldn’t take a fag back into the pride, or something like that.”

“He did, and Alpha Deker tore him a new one for daring to question his decisions. The pride is part of the council. Alpha Deker will do the right thing.”

“And you don’t care that it will mean your father will probably end up in jail?” Dane asked.

Sebastian looked at him. “How old are you?”

“Sixty-nine.”

Sebastian nodded. “So you were about ten when I left? I remember you were a kid.”

“Yes. I thought you were dead. Most of the pride did.”

“And you thought my father had something to do with it.”

“Well, yeah. I mean, it wasn’t a secret that he wanted you to marry into Alpha Bolan’s family and that you didn’t want to.”

“We both know my father is an asshole.
