Gabrielle placed the meal in front of Weston and waited for his reaction. He smiled at her and grabbed his fork. That was a good sign, wasn’t it? Why was she nervous, anyway? He had eaten the macaroni and cheese she made for him the first night they met. The night she got pregnant.

This roast felt a little different, though. There would be no sex after. It was too bad, really, because Weston knew what the hell he was doing in the bedroom. And to be fair, they could have sex if they wanted to. After all, it’s not like she could get any more pregnant than she already was. But they had agreed to keep things platonic for the sake of their child, and she wouldn’t go against that. It was for the best. Really. She just had to keep her hormones in check.

Could her hormones really be responsible? She was barely two months pregnant. She had no clue. She would ask her mom when they talked tomorrow. Maybe she would even grab one of those pregnancy books that terrified her because she didn’t want to see any pictures of someone giving birth. That part freaked her right out.

“Gabrielle?” Weston said. “Are you okay? You’re standing there, looking a little pale. Are you feeling all right?”

“What? Oh. Yes. Fine. Just got lost in my thoughts.” She sat and tucked into her dinner. The roast was delicious, as she knew it would be. It almost melted onto her tongue, and she moaned her appreciation. “Not to brag or anything, but, man! I make a mean roast.”

Weston smiled at her. “I will say, this is very good. I usually eat my meat …” He paused, frowning as if deciding how to finish his thought. “A little bit rarer, but this is good.”

She beamed at him. That was a good sign. The man didn’t like to eat or to eat in front of other people, but he liked her dish. That was a major victory.

“Good job on the potatoes,” she said.

Weston laughed softly. “Well, I didn’t get any on the ceiling, so I guess it was a good first try.”

“Obviously!”

They continued to eat in silence. Gabrielle didn’t want to overwhelm Weston with chatter in case he needed to focus a bit on his food. She didn’t want to be the cause of his discomfort.

Once they were both done, they cleared away their plates and began to do the dishes. Once again, Gabrielle was struck by how well they worked together, even when they were quiet. It was like they had known each other for years, and they could sink into the other’s presence without even thinking about it. Gabrielle had only ever been able to do that with her mother. This was different, obviously. Every time she brushed past him, she wanted to kiss him.

Or better yet, she wanted him to reach out, grab her, and kiss her. He wouldn’t, though. They were platonic. Friends. Co-parents who were going to make it work for their unborn child.
