Important Tips for Steaming

These steaming tips are inclusive of both Regular Steam and Pressure Steam.

• Foods should be cut into similarly sized pieces to ensure even steaming.

• Foods should be placed with room on all sides to allow steam to reach all angles of the food and cook it evenly.

• Foods should be arranged in one layer when steaming to ensure consistent steam circulation. If you have multiple racks, each rack can hold one layer of food.

• Always open the lid away from your face. Remember that steam is hotter than water and there will be plenty of steam left in the inner chamber of the Instant Pot, regardless of when using Regular Steam or Pressure Steam.

• When cooking with Regular Steam, avoid removing the glass lid too frequently to check on your food, as it dramatically drops the temperature inside the Instant Pot.

• All foods will continue to cook slightly after the cooking process is stopped simply due to the hot temperature inside the food itself (known as “carryover cooking”). If you are attempting to judge the proper time to steam an item, stop the steaming process when foods are at their brightest color and remove them from the heat source immediately to allow for minimum carryover.
