Angel

Before the doorbell rings, the crunch of tires and beats of pumping hearts alert me that visitors have arrived. I adjust my earrings in front of the full-length mirror and smooth my hands down my thighs. I may still look like the old me, but nothing about how my body works is the same. The intense hunger, the alertness, the incredible sexual need, and now the sense of belonging—it may overwhelm me, but at the same time it keeps me from falling off the brink when I think about the loss of my family. About Roman being captured by those bastards. And about Uncle Nick, who at some time in the future I’ll need to face.

The sound of laughter as Clarise lets my new friends in tells me tonight is not going to be that night. I race down the stairs, hanging onto the polished marble banner as I rush to the bottom.

“Well, damn. Don’t you clean up nice?” Embry says, throwing her arms around me.

Lucianna grins and holds up a huge bottle of Descallia Red. “You are all sworn to secrecy,” she says, narrowing her eyes at Delilah and then the rest of us.

Delilah turns her fingers in front of her lips. “What did you do, raid the Descallia private stock?” she asks.

“Salvatore has an entire wine room of this stuff. He won’t miss one little, well, big bottle,” she says, laughing as Clarise takes it from her.

We all walk to the great room. I hand the ladies each a glass as Clarise pours them from behind the bar, and we settle onto the couches as she leaves the room.

“I’m so glad you guys could come over. I’ve had about all of the me time I can stomach today. I got a workout in the lower-level gym and practiced the combat moves you showed me, and studied the Vade Mecum chapters and all the other stuff Trentino left me to read. How do you get your minds off where the guys go and what they do when they’re not with you? It’s kinda driving me crazy right now.”

Lucianna’s deep green eyes capture mine with her own. “It will pass. They want to keep you protected. Nothing else. Sometimes, even knowing my history, Salvatore still tries to leave me at home. Protecting us is in their DNA. Next time, we’ll bring my sister Isala, too. She is completely absorbed with trying to find answers for Salvatore in the Vade Mecum. I tried my hardest to drag her with me, but no dice this time. Far too busy.”

“At least she doesn’t throw ice daggers your way every time she sees you now,” Embry says before turning to me. “Isala didn’t think much of Lucianna when Salvatore brought her into the fold. She could see how much he was starting to care about her and didn’t want anyone to take her sister’s place. Now I think it was pretty sweet of her, but at the time I thought she was a real bitch,” Embry says before taking a sip of her wine.
