CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE RAIN FELL on the Eastern Shore, not in the spotty bands Gerald had seen there before, but in steady torrents. There’d been a time when he would have happily confined himself to the indoors and written as the light rumble of thunder and the monotony of precipitation served as a pleasant, creative backdrop. But with the woman he wanted engrossed in the tavern next door, he frowned at the downpour from the windows of the inn.

He’d forgone his usual cup of Earl Grey and taken the mug of Briar’s black coffee Cole had offered him. Gerald had only drank a few sips of the brew, the substance going cold even as he continued to clench the handle of the mug and watch the rain from the sunroom that was empty except for him.

The bay view suite was vacant once more. He could pack up his things and return to Hanna’s and its hospitality. It would certainly be easier than weathering Olivia’s silence and his own damnable writer’s block that was back in full force. He’d had to call Dwight to tell him it would indeed be another week before he’d be turning in the manuscript...if not more.

Gerald was a patient man. He liked to think he was an understanding one, too. But Olivia Lewis tested him. She’d turned his life upside down and refused to grant him the time he needed with her to reconfigure it all, to find out what it was about her that made him reach for her.

And as long as she kept him at arm’s length, the more tangled up he felt inside.

He could’ve gone flying off the handle. He could’ve cursed and scowled for all the woman made him a nutter. Instead, he stood and watched the rain come down in buckets on the Eastern Shore.

His free hand wandered into the pocket of the jeans he’d picked up several days ago in town. He’d never found much desire for wearing jeans before coming to Fairhope. But something about the laid-back quality of life he’d found here on the shore called to the need for Wranglers. His fingertips came up against something warm and metal at the bottom. Delving a bit farther, he hooked the small circle on the tip of his middle finger and pulled it out into the dim light of the rainy day.

The band was too small to fit any one of his fingers. The gold shined like new, unmarked by a single blemish. He’d put it on Olivia’s finger the night they were married in Vegas. It was after her departure from the Bellagio penthouse that he found the wedding ring under the bed while looking for his cuff links.

And so the chase began. Though now he had to admit, he was growing weary. He kept the larger, matching band he’d found in the pocket of the suit trousers in his wallet, tucked safely behind his identification.

However, when he’d come to Fairhope to find her, he’d needed Olivia’s closer.
