Chapter Five

“Oh! Should we stop in here?” Clara asked excitedly.

Christmas was closing in fast, and over the past couple weeks, Francesca had found that Clara was an excellent shopping buddy. Their arms were full of bags, but one more stop wouldn’t hurt.

Francesca grinned, staring up at the scrolling lingerie shop signage. “Sure. I’ve been looking for something special for Malcom.”

“I mean… sure, they ‘prefer us naked’.” Clara formed air quotes with her fingers. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t dress up every once in a while, right?” Her gaze temporarily darkened, the way Francesca noticed a few times since they met. “It took me a long time to think like that, but hey, here we are.”

Francesca followed Clara inside. She’d never shopped for lingerie in a store before. Only online since she assumed they didn’t carry fun stuff in her size. However, Clara was also on the thick-n-curvy side, so maybe she knew something about this place.

She went directly to the back corner of the store and attacked a rack of flimsy items, pulling a hanger loose and holding it up to examine. Quickly, she shook her head and returned it, flicking another one free.

“Oooh, this would look great on you, Franny, with your auburn locks!” It’d been a long time since someone called her Franny. Her family and friends used to, but Malcom refused, saying her name was too beautiful to shorten.

Her heart swelled at the memory.

It was only a week before the wedding and Francesca had decided she wasn’t going to let her woes taint the most important day of their lives. Malcom deserved better than that. He’d been so attentive lately, doing so many little things to make her day brighter. Whispering sweet things in her ear. Surprising her with flowers he’d made himself. Bringing her coffee when she was too busy to grab her own.

Her man always made her feel important, special, treasured. His queen. His Bright Spot, even when she was struggling silently. He was a gift.

What he often forgot was that he was her bright spot too, lighting up her days and nights when all she could see was gray skies ahead.

Tonight, she was going to remind him.

She grabbed the sheer negligee from Clara, holding it up to her chest. It was a soft white color with a faint gold shimmer. Just flashy enough to suggest she was the queen Malcom thought her to be.

It was sort of perfect.

“Do they have it in my size, though?”

“Oh, yes.” Clara waved off her worries. “That’s why we’re here. This place caters to all body types.”

“You seem familiar with our small selection of shopping options here.”

Clara looked away. “I used to live here,” she muttered. “Didn’t I mention it?”

“No. But that explains why you seem so familiar. I thought so from the first time you walked into Brightwoods.”

Francesca noticed Clara’s shoulders stiffen but she quickly pulled another piece from the rack and held it to her body. “What do you think of this color for me?” she asked.
