Capturing Self-Data

In order to begin systematic emotion analytics, I have had a number of traders speak directly into an audio recording device and in turn find that instead of reporting on their various levels of fear, they are reiterating a CNBC-style market commentary. They are shocked that they never mentioned a feeling. On the other hand, I have had clients who attempted to begin to track their feelings and found themselves bowled over by how many different feelings they were having but prior to the exercise had no knowledge of. One of my early clients found that he neither liked a recorder nor a computer so he decided on one of these big notepads like I have here on the side of the room. After a few days, he had wallpapered his entire private office with large-print notes on the feelings he had as he monitored the market and his trades.

Begin to capture a record of what you are feeling. The simple act of acknowledging it, which by definition occurs when you are writing it down, will actually provide some protection from the destructive and unconscious acting out of feelings that you thought you were supposed to control.
