I sat shocked by what Cassie had told me. All the rumors of why she was the way she was, broke at that table. Most in the human world believed she was a pureblood, not that she had herself turned to save her life to be with the man she loved who betrayed her.

I found her to be more human than she gave herself credit for. What she thought was hatred was loss. What she saw as revenge was the betrayal that never left. To keep her life and the lives of her horde preserved, she reacted the only way she knew how.

“Cassie, I am sorry for what happened to you. No woman should ever have to deal with something like that.”

I tried to put my hand on hers as a comforting gesture, She pulled hers away. She straightened her posture and sucked her vulnerability back into herself.

“I am fine. It is what it is. I have survived this long. I do not plan to give up now.”

I had not doubted that she would. I knew the blood of her enemies would flow for as long as she stayed alive, or until she purged the betrayal from her system.

Before I spoke another word, Hannah returned with a small feast. I had not seen so much food in an exceptionally long time. My eyes bulged. To not break bread with her would have been inappropriate behavior. I ate methodically and slowly. Deer meat, roasted vegetables, fresh bread, and ale consumed my senses. It was then I noticed our meals differed.

Cassie had blood pudding in front of her with a cup of crimson liquid. I became curious.

“You cannot eat meat?”

“We can but it is of a different variety. Animal meat is detrimental to our kind.”

“Well, if it’s not animal meat, what other kind is there?”

“Surely, you are not that naïve.” Cassie cocked her left eyebrow.

I mulled over what she said in my mind. I finally dawned on me. She not only used humans for their blood but for…

“How can you do that?”

“It is the same as if your kind went hunting. We just have different prey.”

“It is most certainly NOT the same! You used to be one of us!” I ducked my head down and lowered my voice.

“When a human chooses to join the Elite, everything about them changes. Bloodlust becomes prevalent. We cannot exactly drain one of our own, so…”

“But you have been known to feed from your own.”

“Yes. That happens if one of us sustains an injury during battle and we need to heal quicker or if we are engaging in physical pleasure. It comes naturally that way. It intensifies things.”

I learned so many things about Corrus and vampires in general as I talked with Cassie. The thought of not sharing the information with my team and the Resistance sickened me.

I wanted to give her a piece of my mind right then, but Alexander interrupted us. He ran down the stairs with urgency.

“My Queen, we are being attacked.”

Cassie stood at once.
