The idea is that as people journey through the course with others interested in reflecting on life’s big questions, they are given the opportunity to consider what they think and talk it through with others.

Essence

Written by Rob Frost and published by Share Jesus International in 2002, Essence is a six-week course designed to be attractive and accessible to those who would see themselves as on a spiritual journey, but might not have considered the Christian tradition as having much to offer those who are interested in body, mind and spirit. It is badged as a course designed ‘to stimulate a deeper spiritual life, drawing from the teachings of Jesus and the Christian mystics’. The style is laid-back and unthreatening, and very experiential – relaxation exercises, making bracelets, smashing pots, modelling in dough. Essence is designed to take place in a non-religious building, and could be run as an evening class in a local college. The Bible is used as a resource in each of the sessions, all of which end with a prayer in the name of Jesus. The sessions consist of six ‘journeys’:

Journey 1: so far – bonding, belonging, community, touch, spiritual highs and lows

Journey 2: within – identity, image, perception, affirmation

Journey 3: to a better world – a perfect creation, the eco-system, destruction, creator, stewardship, partnership

Journey 4: to wholeness – body, mind, spirit, emotions, physical and mental pain

Journey 5: to spirituality – spirituality, religious experience, seeking God, types of prayer, coming into God’s presence

Journey 6: to the future – hopes and dreams, the future, eternity
