Arla

“I understand.”

Long after the call that had just changed her life – more than that, her very fate – came to an end, Arla continued to stare at her phone.

“Tell me it isn’t true!” Came a voice that was achingly familiar, yet hurt more than any other at that precise moment in time. “It’s just a bunch of poppycock, right?”

Arla could have snorted at her sister’s ever-colorful choice of words, but she was in no mood to laugh. She would much rather dig a hole in the ground and disappear from the face of the Earth.

Zona barged into her office, only unlike the day before Arla didn’t bother to grumble about security guards and knocking on doors. She just stared at her gorgeous sister with all the envy in the world, now stripped of even a title to rival Zona’s perfection.

“Is it?” The auburn-haired beauty breathed, holding her cellphone up with a shaky hand. “Is any of the hogwash the Order just told me actually real?”

Arla didn’t respond. She sorted through the paperwork on her desk, and pocketed an O.M.A letter praising the outstanding work she had done during the Fae vs Troll crisis. That was hers.

“By all moons,” Zona exhaled after a few minutes of frigid silence. “So it’s true.”

Her sister walked over to Arla’s desk and searched for her gaze. Her green eyes brimmed with pity.

“Why did you do that, Arla?” she asked quietly. “Why did you protect the guy? I thought you hated his guts.”

Arla cleared her throat and wished away the redness surging to her cheeks. If the phone call Zona had received was anything like the one that had just signed off Arla’s fate, she was sure her sister knew all the juicy details.

Now that she had all her personal items gathered, Arla made her way out the room. But Zona stopped her before she got to the door.

Painted nails resting on Arla’s shoulder, the sultry witch pressed in a trembling voice: “Did the bastard hurt you? Did he make you do –”

“Of course not,” she snapped. “I’m a full-grown woman, and I have enough magick in me to slay Axel Lacroix ten times over.” Why she hadn’t done as much was another question.

Fishing into her pocket, Arla retrieved a small key. It was the last thing she wanted to do, but she handed it over to Zona with a world of resentment. “Take it. It’s yours now.”

Zona hesitated before she accepted the key to what had once been Arla’s office.

“I’ll fix this,” her sister pledged with something that looked suspiciously like tears in her emerald gaze. “I’ll get everything to the way it used to be. Don’t you worry, Arla.”

Her heart twisted from the humiliation of the entire situation. Arla knew she couldn’t blame anyone but herself, and that she was being cruelly unfair to Zona. She would make amends later. Right now she couldn’t bear the very sight of her sister.

“That’s not important,” Arla muttered through clenched teeth. “Just focus on honoring the Reaper title.
