CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
SYLVIA
When the guys left the house, I busied myself with cleaning up the cups we'd used for tea. Then I wiped down the counters. When that was done, I loaded the dishwasher and set it to run. Between each task, I looked at the clock, doing my best to be patient.
But exactly twenty-one minutes after the door had closed behind them, I couldn't take it anymore. Leaving everything where it was, I hurried over to the front door and pulled it open to stare at the thick and lush hedge of ivy now covering my banister.
Thankfully, I'd finished painting all of the railing it was now crawling on. Unfortunately, not all of the paint had dried, and I could see smudges of white on some of the leaves. As I stepped onto the porch to get a closer look, I could feel my heart beating just a bit faster, and yet the plants were fine. They'd stopped growing with unnatural speed, and now they seemed to be nothing more than normal vegetation.
But thick, dense, and very healthy-looking.
I bent over to peer through the branches, proving to myself that I'd accidentally "made" a very effective privacy screen. Well, one that came waist high, at least, because that was where the ivy had paused - right at the top of the banister.
Curious, I made my way down the stairs to look at the mess from the front. In truth, I liked how the greenery improved the look of my cottage. It seemed much more appropriate than the bare stone and white trim, almost like it pulled the house into the rest of the forest around it. Even better, the ivy had grown up higher on the sides where the porch met the stone, and I had a feeling it might keep growing up towards the second floor in the future.
But while it was beautiful, I still couldn't understand how it had happened. Mostly because I'd put those Mason jars with stones around the base of the porch! Margie had said the moonstones we made were supposed to protect the house. Then again, these hadn't been in the moonlight for a full month, and she'd also said that was important. Granted, I knew exactly nothing about any of this.
Creeping closer - and worried the ivy might reach out for me or something - I checked to see if the little jars were still there. I had to get very close, because the stems of these plants had aged to look like they'd been here for decades. Thick stalks with hundreds of branches coming off them filled the previously empty flowerbeds. And yet... Leaning in, I could just make out the first of those jars. The top was sealed, the glass was intact, and in the dappled sunlight, I could see the layer of water over the stone I'd put inside it.
The confusing part was that the ivy had wrapped around it, almost hugging the jar to the main stem. Moving down the line, I checked the next, then the one after, to find they were all the same way.
