Ember

She was getting out of that hut. That much was clear. Her father didn’t like to acknowledge it, because it hurt his pride, but she was a more powerful magic-user than he was.

She had news for him. His spells had only worked for so long because she’d allowed them to. She hadn’t wanted to force his hand, and make him fight back against her. He was sure to lose, and she had not been prepared for that. But now she had nothing to lose.

She’d been rejected by her mate, and abandoned by her father. Her coven had done nothing to step in and protect her. Only Rosa had stood by her side.

She sat down on the floor and crossed her legs, centering herself. She began the chant in Latin, and then once she was done, switched to Spanish and then repeated it in Inca for good measure. She lifted her hands into the air, and let her magic envelop her. When her magic was seeping out of her pores, she let it swirl around her. Then she released it.

She meant merely to pop the door open, but it was blown off, landing with a thud on the ground.

Her mouth fell open. She’d been confident that she could get out, but she hadn’t expected it to happen quite so quickly.

She pulled her magic back to herself, letting it settle in her skin before getting up. Once she felt settled, she got up and dusted herself off. She looked outside the door, prepared to blast anyone who got in her way, but there was no one. Her father was so arrogant, so sure of his own power that he hadn’t even left a guard outside the hut.

She was going to get off this island. If she could break her father’s magic, then maybe she could break the curse. And if not, then she’d find a way to contact Brennan and get his help. If she couldn’t contact him, then she’d see him the next time he arrived. She was done taking a backseat.

She strode through their village, and through the forest, not bothering to conceal herself. She walked down the hill and over the sand, and then she dove into the ocean, slicing through the waves. She made it farther than she ever had before, but she still hit the invisible wall.

She could go no further. But she was going to stay, and study the way the magic in the curse felt. If she could identify the spell, that was a start. Brennan’s friend Nora was supposedly a master at witchcraft, but she was working at a disadvantage, being a half a world away from the source.

Ember treaded water. She put all of her focus on the barrier they kept her from living her life to the fullest. That’s why she didn’t see him coming.

When she realized there was a wizard behind her it was too late. He grabbed her by the back of the head and yanked. She began to cast a spell but he only laughed.
