I love this picture of God helping us lasso lies by actively applying His truth. We take our concerns to Him, and He meets us there in our place of need.

In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a fiery furnace in Babylon because they would not bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s image of gold (talk about a big worry!) . Yet they declared, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (verses 17–18, NIV).

May our “what if” worry be changed to “even if” worship as we remember who is with us. Even if our what-if happens, the good news does not change. Jesus is enough, even in the dark, even in the battle, even among flames.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve wasted enough time worrying. I’m ready to trade in my foggy thinking for a clear view of the gospel. I want to experience the foundation of the prison shaking and the doors flying open as everyone’s chains fall off! I want to see the Enemy defeated as we let God fight for us, as we stand firm on His promises. I want to see Jesus dancing in the fire with us as we refuse to bow down to another. I want to learn to sit instead of throwing a fit when things don’t turn out as expected.

We don’t have to be prisoners of worry, even if we’re faced with confining circumstances. Let’s retire from it and choose to trust our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer—not as a last resort but as a first line of defense.

My friend Niki (who has a fabulous British accent) prayed for me to choose worship over worry because of an unsettling doctor’s appointment for one of my kids. She prayed that my child would hunger for food and that I would hunger for God at every turn. She went on to say something that made an enormous difference in how I approach worry: “Where fear and worry are appetizing, may she grow sick of that. May worship and Your Word be more fulfilling and appetizing than worry.”

We starve worry by not sneaking it scraps under the table. We don’t let it grow rapidly in size, because we refuse to feed it. Instead of being manipulated by worry, we divert our attention to worship. We take our hunger to God and ask Him to strengthen and satisfy us as we feast on truth.

In the same way Jesus reclined in the home of Mary and Martha, He tenderly speaks to us from His residence in our hearts. He answers our what-if with Himself.

My daughter, what if your limp turned to lightness because of one thing? What if your striving became settledness
