As I trudge through the snow, going south back to my pack, my thoughts drift to Eartha over and over again. It's like she's always at the forefront of my mind. I can't deny that I want her. Her brutal strength and sheer power. Her resilience and stamina. Her body is trained to take on the toughest of opponents. Her eyes never hide the truth of what she feels. Her lips that I want to take into mine every time I watch her speaking. The fire in her eyes lights a warmth in her mind. The pain in her heart resonates through every fiber of my being, and all I want to do is take her in my arms, protect her from all of those that have threatened to take her out of the world, and keep her safe. Even though things between us are so complicated, and I cannot carry out my duty as her mate due to the circumstances of our tribal origin, I cannot help feeling the aching need to turn back to her and kiss her, feeling her body melt into mine, feel her mind come at ease at the feeling that she is now home with the one that she is destined to be with.

But before I can get too far on that train of thought, I hear wolves approaching.

I spin around, quickly taking in my surroundings. It doesn't take long to realize that I'm surrounded. My heart begins to race as I prepare to shift into my wolf form, not knowing what their intentions are.

“What do you want?” I ask, trying to figure out why there has been a barrage of attacks since I came north. I keep my eyes peeled, looking around me to see where they are coming from and to be ready for any flash attacks.

“We're here to avenge Zack's death. You will die here, and we will leave your body to be ravished by the ice,” the wolf growls.

My mind races as I try to make sense of the situation. I barely have time to process their words before I'm attacked. Fatigue rests heavy in my bones, and I try to fight and keep my vitals safe. I pull back as much as I can and keep a safe distance from their range of attacks. All I can do now is defend. I do not have enough stamina to rage into the crowd of wolves coming at me. In this moment, I think of how much different it would have been if Eartha was here. I wonder if she can feel my distress the way it comes like second nature to me to feel hers. The fight is fierce, and I do my best to hold my own, but without Eartha by my side, I'm quickly losing ground. They are closing in on me and tightening the circle around me.

The wolves are relentless. Every time I think I've gained the upper hand, another wolf takes its place, attacking me from a different angle.
