“It cracks me up that they’re all just standing around staring at it,” my mom said as she sat beside me on the couch. We were on the screened-in porch at the back of the house with a perfect view into the garage where my dad, brothers, nephew, and some of my cousins were inspecting my motorcycle and the shiny new paint job I absolutely loved. “Your dad told me you described the paint job you wanted when you left the bike with Ransom, and I wasn’t surprised at all.”

“You know I’ve always loved any shade of pink,” I told Mom with a laugh.

“God yes. Pink, glitter, bows, dresses . . . all the things I had no clue about. You’ve been a learning experience since the day you were born.”

I propped my foot up on the table and studied my favorite pair of riding boots. I’d had them for ages. They were worn enough to be perfect, but the pink stitching on the leather was still vivid enough to stand out. “Look at that. My boots coordinate with my bike.”

My mom let her head drop as she groaned dramatically. “Where did I go wrong?”

I laughed because I’d heard her say that about each of her children so many times over the years.

Mom’s dog, Sherman, an Australian cattle dog she adopted last fall, came out onto the porch with his favorite stuffed toy in his mouth. He dropped it at Mom’s feet and then sat on his haunches, staring at her expectantly. She leaned forward and rubbed her hands up and down the sides of his neck before she picked up the toy and leaned back again. She made a tsk noise, and I swear Sherman smiled before he hopped up between us and settled in. Mom tucked his stuffed animal that he was rarely ever without by her hip, and he rested a paw on it as he pressed up against her. With one last loving glance up at her, he sighed and then closed his eyes, down for the count until one of us disturbed him.

I heard nails clicking on the tile and wasn’t surprised when the flutter of wings announced that Dad’s birds, two absolutely fantastic cantankerous assholes, walked around the corner of the couch and climbed onto the coffee table. Scarlett, the harlequin macaw, bobbed her head and screamed, “Asshole!” over and over, while Merlin hopped onto the toe of my boot and slowly made his way up the expanse of my leg so he could get some love.

“You worried me the day Rylee called your dad and said you had some sort of revelation in the middle of the furniture store before disappearing on her motorcycle.” I didn’t say anything, just shrugged and focused on Merlin as I smoothed my hands down his back over and over. The movement was rhythmic and relaxed me almost as much as it relaxed him. Finally, after getting no response, Mom said, “Your dad told me about the thing with Lucky.
