Chapter 10

Jordan watched her leave. He considered going after her, but knew it would be a mistake for both of them. Instead, he gathered up his things, locked the office and headed out. Cleveland was coming toward the trailer just as he locked the door. “Good night, Cleveland.”

“Jordan, I was just coming to get you, got a minute?”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“I think you might want to see this.”

Jordan walked with Cleveland to the secondary site. It was obvious even in the darkness that someone had been there. The ground around the area was dug up in several places and one of the other security guards was carefully putting a metal flashlight into a Ziploc bag. “Did you find anybody?”

“No, just the flashlight. The battery was dead,” Cleveland said. “Whoever did this was unprepared this time.”

Jordan shook his head. “Close the circle on this.”

Cleveland nodded his head to the other security guard.

Jordan turned and headed back to the front of the site.

“Whoever did this knows exactly what they’re doing and what’s going on up here,” said Cleveland. “They’re looking for something and I don’t think they found it, which means they’ll be back. And we’ll be ready. I suggest we install some surveillance cameras along the back fence over there. It looks like that was the point of entry.”

Jordan nodded. Cleveland was the best of the best when it came to security. He intended to leave everything up to him. “I’ll talk to Ian and Tamika tomorrow. I want you to get whatever you need to finish this. Put it in yourself. I want this done quietly, just the four of us.”

Cleveland nodded. “Understood. I’ll take care of it.”

Jordan went back to the office, picked up a box and closed the office door behind him. Maybe he would do as Ian suggested and take the weekend off. It was something he hadn’t done in a long time. Maybe a little R & R was just what he needed. He locked the door, waved to the security guards and headed to his truck. He put the box on the passenger seat and took off for the night.

He caught the last ferry off the island that evening. On the way back to the mainland he usually made calls or followed up on emails during the twenty-minute boat ride across the bay, but tonight his mood was introspective.

Making love to Sheri Summers was a calculated move. He had decided to catch her off guard. He succeeded. What he hadn’t expected was to feel the way he felt afterward. He wanted more. He liked the way she tasted and felt in his arms. Women were usually putty in his hands. A little charm and charisma and he could get them to do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. He needed to find a way to charm Sheri. If she made a big deal about this, his plan would have failed and he had no intention of letting that happen.

He thought about the first night he met Sheri at Mamma Lou’s house months ago.
