Nearly two-thirds of the guys from their 20s through their 40s viewed pornography, a figure that dropped to about half in their 50s and 60s and to about one fifth in their 70s. Keep in mind that these are married men, most of whom would call themselves Christians and many of whom worship regularly in the church I serve. That tells me this is a big issue.

That’s not to say that everyone who views pornography once in a while is addicted to it. The results of our survey suggest that most younger men view pornography sometimes. I’m also not suggesting that there is an immediate and dire physical or psychological price to pay for using it. But for many, what starts out as self-gratification can lead to pain. It takes more self-discipline than many possess to say, “No more.” For some, pornography is a gateway experience leading to addiction, risky and inappropriate sexual behavior, adultery, and other behaviors that can have devastating consequences.

First-century Christians were not immune to this struggle. Many of them lived in a highly sexualized society, and Paul and the other apostles spoke about the challenges of what we would call sexual addiction. The Greek word Paul used for sexual immorality, for acting in ways that make you a slave to sex, was porneio, from which we derive our word pornography.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5a, Paul writes, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor, not with lustful passion.”
