Chapter 14

Take that from the top, Brianna!” Juice yelled into the intercom from the other side of the glass. “I need you to go up on that last note and no riffs. Save that shit for the concert tour.”

Brianna belted out the tune just the way Juice had told her to. It was the sweetest sound he’d ever heard. He was mesmerized watching Brianna, who had her eyes closed, feeling every note.

“That was perfect,” Juice whispered under his breath. It was his style to rarely compliment his artists. He didn’t want them to get too comfortable and think they were good enough. He wanted them to keep striving for perfection. But for the first time in his career, Juice thought he might actually have heard perfection. Brianna had recorded six songs in a row and her voice on the last one was as strong and as beautiful as on the first.

Juice told Brianna to take a fifteen-minute break. There was a piano in another soundproof room adjacent to where she was doing her vocals. She grabbed a bottled water from the waiting area between rooms and headed into the room with the piano. She sat at the piano and started playing. Getting into a song that she had written, she hummed as she played. Her intensity reminded Juice of himself as a young boy, the way he’d played in his room with his beloved keyboard. The purity of her skills inspired Juice. In the control room, Juice worked out something on the boards with the engineer.

“Does that song have words?” asked Juice through the intercom.

“Um, yes,” said Brianna, a little startled, not knowing he could hear her.

“Gerry, turn the recorder on,” Juice commanded as he left the studio and headed into the room where Brianna was.

“Can you sing that song for me?” Juice asked Brianna.

Brianna grinned and began to sing, glancing up periodically to look deeply into Juice’s eyes. Against his will he felt his heart skip a beat.
