Chapter Thirty-Three

For the better part of the month, everything was like a dream. The weather improved, signs of spring popping up in the flower beds, in the grass poking through the snow, in the buzzing of bees, and the sounds of the forest waking up. As the spring thaw commenced, so did the frozen grip that had taken hold of her love life.

Every evening they made love, in his bed, in her bed, on the couch, in the barn, over the kitchen counter. He’d fingered her in the bathtub and bent her over the sink, where she could watch his face in the mirror as he sunk into her while her body was still damp from the water. More than once, Lucifer had complained and raced from the room when things got heated.

At night they slept in the same bed. She hated waking up sore and stiff, but she wasn’t about to kick Ian out of bed just for a decent night of sleep. But she was willing to purchase a new bed and was contemplating working mattress shopping into their next trip to town.

On one of the warmer days, she and Ian sat on the platform while she mixed and boiled a batch of skin elixir to help remove boils, warts, sunspots, and eczema. At the end, she’d bottle some of it up with a strand or two of fairy hair. Admittedly, those bottles were a little more expensive as they could reverse the early skin cancer in humans if caught quickly.

Her driveway was narrow and difficult for some vehicles, especially in the winter and early spring when the ground was unpredictable and the trees had been neglected. Large broken limbs and deep mud puddles could make it impossible for modern cars to get throug.

So, when a car engine stopped a good distance from the cabin, Quinn knew they were expecting company. When Quinn caught sight of Rowan’s worn, old, bent hat coming up the lane, she smiled, happy to have a visit from her friend after a few months of isolation in the cabin, but then she spotted the box in his arms.

Straightening from where she was stirring the cauldron, she glanced to Lucifer. Crossing the wooden boards, she nudged the dozing cat with her foot. “Get up.”

“What?” Voice thick with sleep and edged with a hearty dose of irritability, Lucifer blinked up at her. He’d been enjoying the warm breeze and bright sun rays while Ian whittled next to him.

Ian glanced from her to Rowan. “What’s wrong?”

“Rowan’s coming.” She prodded the cat once more, prompting him to his feet. “He’s got a box. Make yourself scarce.”

“Shit.” Lucifer scurried from the platform, disappearing into the long grass.

“Yeah, you better run!” Rowan sounded pissed, but even so, he gingerly set the box on the platform away from the fire. He glanced up at her. “Your damn familiar knocked up my cat again.”

She sighed. “Sorry, Rowan. How is she?”

Her friend rubbed at his brow. “Celeste is fine. She’s a trooper. But tell him to stay away from her.
