A Good Example

As a result, you have become an example

to all the believers in Greece—

throughout both Macedonia and Achaia.

—1 Thessalonians 1:7

The teen was desperate. “I can’t go home. My dad will kill me. He hates me. I don’t know what to do.”

I knew a little about this young man. He’d been coming to our youth meetings for a while. But now he seemed terrified. “What did you do?” I asked gently.

“I stole money. I trashed my room. I sprayed paint on his truck.” He looked down, weeping. “I didn’t mean it; I was just so mad.”

“What if I talk to him for you?”

“Now? He’s too mad.”

“Okay,” I said. “How about you come to my house for the night. Things will look better in the morning. Then we’ll go see him together. Does that sound like a plan?”

He looked up at me, astonished. “You would do that?”

“Sure. Now let’s go.”

On the way out, one of the youth leaders caught me. “That was great, James. You showed him a real example.”
