Montana all looked the same. Mountains and cows. Cows and mountains. A horse. Another ten horses. Damn I was bored.

Everyone else was asleep and it was my turn to drive. Reese was beside me in the passenger seat, and Celeste was curled around Lincoln in the backseat. She’d lost her seatbelt and was just lying between his thighs, her head on his chest as he spread across the seat. I wish I was a painter rather than a musician at that moment, because I wanted to be able to paint them like that. So innocent and carefree.

It was almost time to cross the border into Canada, and we were running on time. So far, the whole trip had been completely uneventful. I wasn’t sure if it was because Brut’s predictions were correct, or because we never would have run into trouble anyway as the Bears had destroyed the bounty hunters. We might never know, but so far so good. I knocked my knuckles on my head so I didn’t jinx us all.

“What are you doing?” Reese asked sleepily.

“Knocking on wood.”

Reese looked at me like I’d lost it, and maybe I had. We’d been driving on and off for an entire day, not stopping for anything but bathroom breaks. I needed to be out of this car before I went insane. Once we were over the border, we could stop for a night somewhere, sleep in an actual bed, make love to Star in an actual bed.

Reese and Linc still hadn’t forgiven me for making good on my promise to give her seven orgasms before we got to Montana. Hell, we were at seven before we even got halfway through Wisconsin.

It really broke up the drive though.

Reese checked his watch and then Brut’s instructions. It was starting to get crumbled from Reese constantly opening and reading it. “It’s almost time. He said if we were early we had to pull into a copse of trees just up here.”

I nodded. We’d been driving down a gravel road for awhile now, and I hadn’t seen a single other car. I was pretty sure it was because there wasn’t another freaking person in this wilderness. We could probably park right here, in the middle of the road, and it would be enough. But Brut hadn’t led us astray yet, so I continued to drive until I found the big stand of trees that Brut must have been referring to in his note, reversing right in and shutting off the car. We’d be hidden here in this odd, dense section of woods, at least for a little while.

The sound of the car turning off, or maybe it was the lack of noise woke Lincoln, and as he shifted awake, so did Celeste.

Lincoln was quickly alert, taking in the surrounding woods. "Where are we?"

Reese gave them both a reassuring smile. "On the border. We're a little early, so we are hiding out like Brut said."

Lincoln snorted but didn't protest. I'm not sure he believed the whole thing either.
