INTERLUDE
JULY 25TH & 26TH 1918
Grand Duchess Tatiana â Victoria Island off Vancouver
25th July 1918
The crutches were just too tempting. Swinging her legs off the bed, and with some considerable difficulty, she exerted all of her strength and heaved herself onto them. Her unsteadiness made her wobble precariously, but with the total of her will she righted her posture and stood up straight for almost the first time in a month. With her eyesight beginning to clear, she made her way to the window and looked out on the bleak landscape before her. From her window, there was a view straight down into the bay and the ship at anchor there, flying the Japanese flag proudly from the stern. Tatiana shook her head. Most of the last month had been a terrible blur. Peopleâs faces coming and going constantly, looks of concern, interspersed with odd memories of Olga being with her, especially when the pain got so great that she felt she could bear it no longer. She shook her head again. That was impossible. Although there was no one to tell her so, she was convinced Olga and the others were dead. Tears began to flow slowly down her face, but with a mighty effort, she controlled them. What was it Olga had said to her that last time in Ekaterinburg?
âTanya, you wonât die. Even if I do. Even if all the rest of us do. Youâll survive. Itâs what you do. What youâve always doneâ¦â
Well, she had survived. But at what cost? And for what purpose?
At that moment, there was a knock at the door.
âCome in.â
A tall, distinguished gentleman Tatiana hadnât seen before came into her room and stood looking at her intently, smiling. His eyes were kind and gentle. Tatiana took an instant liking to him.
âIâm Arthur Connaught. Cousin to His Majesty King George. We havenât met before. Iâm glad to see you up and about. We were very worried about you for a while.â
âAs you can see, Iâm rather hard to killâ¦â Tatiana smiled. But the smile was weak and the Prince noticed that it did not carry as far as her eyes. He was under strict orders to reveal nothing to Tatiana about her family, and was glad of it. He knew how close they had been. That job was one best left for a later time.
The Prince tried to lighten the mood. âDo you want a walk out? I can accompany you. Thereâs no one around at the moment except my ADC and the Japanese nurse from the Kirishima.â He noticed Tatiana looking at the ship. âMagnificent, isnât she?â
Tatiana nodded absently, then turned back to look at the Prince. Her eyes frightened him at that moment. They had oddly changed colour and were of the deepest black. He had the feeling he wasnât looking at Tatiana any more, but someone else, a different person altogether, one much more focussed and powerful. In an instant, she blinked, and her eyes were normal again, that lovely colour of unfocussed light grey.
